An easy one-hour drive north on State Highway One, leads you to Paihia, base for the famous trips and cruises of the beautiful Bay of Islands.
Tutukaka Coast
Another picturesque drive taking in some of the finest beaches and scenery to be found anywhere. Continue over the hills to the famous deep-sea fishing base of Tutukaka, and the cosy bays and fishing spots of the Tutukaka peninsula. Tutukaka is also the base for dive trips to the famous Poor Knights Islands.
Bream Bay Coast
This magnificent expanse of white sparkling sand incorporates the fabulous beaches of Ruakaka, Uretiti, Waipu and Langs Beach is just 30 minutes south of the city. Great swimming, surfing, sunbathing, surf casting and plentiful shellfish in these sparkling waters.
Dargaville and the Kauri Coast
Just a 45 minute drive west leads you to Dargaville, the centre of the Kauri Coast. Discover the rugged beauty of the West Coast at Bayley's Beach with its huge sand dunes and wild surf. Continue north to the white sandy beaches and sparkling fresh waters of Kai Iwi Lakes - (excellent swimming, windsurfing, sailing, water skiing and trout fishing). Further north is the Waipoua Forest with its mighty Kauri trees. Don't miss Tane Mahuta, 1200 years old and the largest known Kauri tree.
